The Who: Introduction

facebookwho-1The Who Question is one of the most important questions you’ll ever face in life. Who are you? It really does define everything about you, so you need to know the answer. The most fundamental problem we face in the world is rooted in not knowing who we are in Christ, placing our identity in almost anything other than Jesus.

We alone were created as image-bearers of God to reflect his goodness and glory to the world. But Satan introduced an identity crisis all the way back in Genesis 3 that we haven’t recovered from since. The world is bidding for our identity, looking to shape and make us into whatever it pleases. So we try to find our identity in all the wrong ways: money, popularity, status, work, sin, suffering, addiction, hobbies, talents, sex, relationships, self, future, fulfillment, even religion. Some of these are good things. Some of these are bad things. Yet none of them seem to really hold the weight of our identity. Let’s be honest: there’s something still missing isn’t it? Even if you had it all, the Who Question still goes unanswered.

That’s because nothing and no one else can hold the weight of your identity but Jesus. Everything else crumbles under the weight of being an idol. So we’re left to ask the Who Question again, Who Am I, by asking a different question: Whose Am I?

If you belong to Christ, you are in Christ. The apostle Paul uses this term 216 times in his letters and numerous times in his masterpiece letter to the Ephesians. Identity is formed in Christ alone, not by making something of your life. This identity is received, not achieved. You’re not living up to an identity, but living FROM an identity given to you for free in Jesus. Everything else may explain you, but it doesn’t define you. In Jesus, it’s not about what you become on your own; but through his redemption he declares: you already ARE!

There’s really only two choices. Either you’ll spend you whole life trying to answer The Who question, relentlessly pursuing anything to fill your identity only to find it crumbling. Or you’ll seek Jesus as the only answer to The Who question and live in the identity that he’s so graciously given to any one that will trust, repent, and follow Him. It’s a simple truth and a simple decision.

So I’ll ask again: Who Are You? Let’s find out together…

The Who: Discovering Your True Identity in Christ

facebookwho-1We started a brand-new sermon series this week at YouthQuake called, The Who: Discovering Your True Identity in Christ. Looking through the book of Ephesians, we’ll discover what God has to say about our identity in Christ. Through Jesus, we are given a new name and a new identity. This 8-week series will uncover the identity crises that we live in every day and God’s answer to them through the marvelous work of Christ. During the series, we have a PHOTO BOOTH setup in our side room for you to take pictures with your friends. Keep posted for some of the best shots! You’re invited to join us every week as we explore the Who Question together.
